The A4 motorway is the longest in Poland. Connects west and east

The A4 motorway is the longest expressway running through our country. It is 667 km long and runs from west to east through southern Poland, leading along the Sudetes and the Carpathians. It belongs to the 3rd to 3rd Pan-European Transport Corridor. It continues the course of the German A4 motorway from Dresden, running in Poland from the border with Germany in Jędrzychowice near Zgorzelec through Bolesławiec, Legnica, Wrocław, Opole, Gliwice, Katowice, Jaworzno, Kraków, Tarnów, Dębica, Rzeszów, Jarosław to the border crossing with Ukraine Korczowa – Krakowiec. The A4 motorway connects to several important roads in Poland. In the vicinity of Bolesławiec (Krzyzowa junction) with the A18 motorway, which leads to the border with Germany in Olszyn (towards Berlin), at the Legnica Południe junction with the S3 expressway, at the Wrocław Południe junction with the A8 motorway (Wrocław Motorway Bypass), at the Gliwice Sośnica junction with the A1 motorway (Rusocin – Gorzyczki), at the Katowice Murckowska junction with national road No. 86, and at the Zgorzelec, Krzywa, Kraków Wielicka, Jarosław Zachód and Korczowa junctions with national road No. 94. The history of the A4 motorway dates back to the 1930s. The Germans started building the road

The origins of the A4 motorway date back to the 1930s. During the Third Reign, the Berlin – Bytom route was marked out in the form of two sections with German markings: RAB 9 Berlin – Breslau (Berlin – Wrocław section) and (German) RAB 29 Breslau – Oppeln – Gleiwitz – Beuthen (Wrocław – Opole – Gliwice section – Bytom). After World War II, the only sections of the future A4 motorway were opened to traffic on September 27, 1936: Krzywa – Legnica (20.5 km), Legnica – Wrocław (Bielany Wroc.) (70.8 km) and the Gliwice – Bytom section (length 12 km, currently DK88). Their total length was 103.3 km. On October 17, 1937, the Golnice – Krzyżowa – Krzywa section (17 km, currently A18 and A4) was opened. By 1945, single-lane sections were also built: Wrocław (Bielany Wroc.) – Brzeg (Owczary) and Ujazd (Nogowczyce) – Gliwice. The Owczary – Nogowczyce section was also being built, but the work was not completed. The Zgorzelec – Bolesławiec section was also being built. The highway, built by the Germans, survived without major changes until the 1990s.

The government will take over a key section of the A4 motorway

The A4 motorway has many important sections. However, the most crucial one is undoubtedly the one stretching between Katowice in Upper Silesia and Krakow in Lesser Poland. This is the busiest section in our country. According to its concessionaire, Stalexport, approximately 47,000 vehicles pass through it every day. Its importance is enormous for the national movement. Therefore, the government does not intend to extend the contract with the current concessionaire, which will expire in 2027. The authorities are considering establishing free journeys on this section and are also planning to increase the capacity of this route. Expansion of the section between Katowice and Kraków with a third lane, which would carry traffic in both directions, is also being taken into account.
