A31: it always gets stuck (a little) at the border

6:45 a.m .: Metz

Monday, 6:45 am, Metz wakes up. In the golden sunlight that rises above the ribbon of asphalt of the A31 towards Luxembourg, things are going well for a Monday morning. The announcement of the continuation of teleworking until December 31, 2020 for all workers in Luxembourg whose activity allows it is certainly not foreign to this newfound fluidity. The two-lane passage in the direction of Thionville where, on weekdays, a slowdown is formed, is free of any obstacle. The Thionville center exit is in sight. It is 7:10 a.m.

7 h 10 : Thionville

New risk of slowdown avoided at the Beauregard bridge, where the Thionvillois take the A31 towards the border. The traffic is just as fluid as when leaving Metz. The speed regulated at 70 km / hour at rush hour if we are to believe the illuminated panels is however not respected. Cars are racing towards Luxembourg, taking advantage of a cleared road to shorten journey times. First slowdown in sight, a hundred meters before the exit Volmerange, Kanfen and Hettange-Grande. Just a few minutes and it starts again.

7 h 18: Volmerange-les-Mines

Second slowdown a kilometer later, on the climb to the Grand Duchy. The border is in sight. First stopper less than a kilometer from the border. The vehicles are moving slowly until they pass the gantry, then onto the A3, on the Luxembourg side.

7 h 34 : Dudelange

Seven minutes left between the border and the Dudelange exit, not enough to whip a cat, for those who travel every day (except during confinement). Especially since in Luxembourg the start of the school year has not yet taken place since it will be on September 16.

New slowdown in the direction of Luxembourg-Ville, near Berchem.

7 h 52 : Cloche d’Or

New traffic jam in the direction of Findel airport, Brussels and Esch-sur-Alzette, where “white collar workers” branch off to go to Kirchberg. For those who want to continue towards the Cloche d’Or and the station district, the tracks are clear. It drives very well. 7:52 a.m., arrival at the Gasperich roundabout at La Cloche d’Or, i.e. a 42-minute journey from Thionville and 1:07 a.m. from Metz center: 10 to 20 minutes better on average than before confinement.
