The team led by Bundesliga-experienced Tom Rothe and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens won a thrilling final against Hertha BSC’s U19s on Sunday 2-1 (1-1) after falling behind.
For BVB it was the ninth title in this age group, while the Berliners missed their second triumph after 2018. Most recently, no champion had been crowned due to the corona pandemic, Dortmund had won the last final in 2019 against VfB Stuttgart
BVB with initial difficulties – Hertha takes the lead
BVB got off to a somewhat cautious start against Hertha BSC at the Wurplatz stadium in Berlin. After almost ten minutes, the ball landed in the Berlin goal – the supposed goal of Dortmund striker Bradley Fink was disallowed due to an offside position.
Just two minutes later, the ball landed in the net again – this time on the other side and this time it was the goal that counted. Luca Wollschläger made it 1-0 for Hertha after Julian Eitschberger got past Tom Rothe too easily on the right and was able to cross into the center (12′).
Bynoe-Guttens equalizes to make it 1-1
The pace stayed high and BVB came into play better in the middle of the first half. After half an hour, Hertha shouldn’t have complained about a penalty for the guests. Fink was brought down with a body check from behind.
Dortmund kept the pressure on during the phase and rewarded themselves in the first half. After Berlin lost the ball in midfield, the ball landed at Rothe, who found Jamie Bynoe-Gittens with a cross (37′).
Bradley Fink shoots Dortmund to the title
Dortmund came out of the dressing room energetically and took the lead with the first attack in the second half. After Hertha was actually able to defuse the situation, the ball landed at Fink, who first beat Eitschberger with two hooks and then beat Hertha keeper Robert Kwasigroch with a low shot from the left (48th). As a result, BVB tried to take control of the game.
Berlin didn’t get the chances they had in the first half, mainly due to many mistakes in the game structure. BVB were safe at the back, the defending champions pushed more and more towards the 3:1 as the game went on, but Lion Semic (74th), Fink (76th) and Rothe (81st) left the preliminary decision behind. In the third minute of added time, BVB goalkeeper Silas Ostrzinski held on to victory and the title after chaos in the penalty area.
“The boys played a great year”said Lars Ricken, the director of the Dortmund youth training center on the Sky TV channel. “I can’t be prouder of the boys”said Ricken, who praised the reaction after losing the cup final against VfB Stuttgart a week ago: “That makes the win so emotional.”
