A young singer helps sell the family home

When you have so much talent in a family, why not use it to sell your house?

Harper Bush, 10, recorded a music video singing the praises of her family home, which is for sale in the North Brighton suburb of Christchurch Beach.

The clip also features an appearance by the family’s dancing estate agent in costume and Harper’s little sisters Sadie, 8, and Clementine, 5.

Since it was posted Thursday on Trade Me and the Harcourts site, the video has already sparked reactions on the Facebook page of agent Daniel Pengelly.

Comments include “This is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time” and “I can’t decide who’s cuter, the kids or you”, as well as lots of heart emojis.

The song was written at Pengelly’s suggestion by Harper’s mother, Tūi-winning children’s songwriter and performer Michal Bush. It turned out to be a bit of a co-production, with Harper adding his own ideas.

Harper, who is learning to sing, said it was hard to read the lyrics well, but she really enjoyed making the video.

“I liked it. It was really fun.”

Her friends haven’t seen the video yet, but some of her teachers have watched it and told her she’s done “a good job.”

Wearing a blue Harcourts rosette, Harper sings that the family loves their home but needs a bigger one, and doesn’t like having to be tidied up for open houses.

“We liked it a lot, but you see, we’re growing up and I want my own room,” she sings.

“So buy my house, and buy it fast, because I don’t like keeping it clean at all.”

Michal Bush said they like to put fun and joy into selling their house.

“We wanted it to be from the kids’ perspective,” she said.

“It’s so important to leave the house they’ve never known, and I thought, why not have fun with this huge stage in life?”

As a musical family, the girls used to appear in their mother’s song videos, so they were happy to show up for the real estate ad, she said.

Performance is also lurking in Pengelly’s resume – in addition to selling real estate, he’s a singer and actor who works part-time in theater sports as Court Jester, runs musical theater and has been to at one time creative director of the Court Theatre.

He said he was eager to bring creativity into his work and make selling their home less stressful for the Bush family.

“I refuse to make any more boring, unimaginative real estate videos.

“I thought we had to have more fun than that, so selling the house for them isn’t just about cleaning and cleaning everything.”

Harper said she would like to be a singer when she grows up. On the other hand, she added, she might even like to be a real estate agent.
