The 24-year-old José Manuel García Zarza, born in the Toledo town of Miguel Esteban, has promoted the solidarity project ‘Que menos que media península’, which consists of traveling around 1,000 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago by bicycle with the aim of raise funds for the non-profit association dedicated to supporting children and adolescents with cancer, the Aladina Foundation.
The idea for this project, according to the person in charge of this initiative, has arisen in the last two years as a result of several events that occurred near his family environment, according to what Zarza himself has told Europa Press.
“I have not been able to bring anyone together because to everyone who I have proposed it seemed crazy and said that they would not be able to bear it,” highlights the young miguelete, who will finally make the Camino alone.
However, the route he has chosen is the one that goes from the south of the province of Toledo, starting with the Levante road and divided into 9 stages of about 100 kilometers each, within which there will be some that will exceed the 110 kilometers.
Regarding the current situation of the pandemic when it comes to assessing the solidarity of people in this type of project, note that “everyone said that we would come out stronger and better”, but “time has revealed that it has not This being the case, there are many psychological and physical sequelae, “he stressed.
In addition, he has pointed out that in certain aspects society is more selfish and, however, in others it is more collaborative, although he has considered that his idea, being novel, is insufficient to know the global assessment of society in this type of Projects.
In the same way, he has outlined that he is in favor of this type of aid being private initiatives, leaving aside policies and public aid for other types of issues.
Likewise, the forerunner of this idea has understood that citizens, in general, “are increasingly aware of the need to perform tests for the early detection of cancer, since 80 or 90 percent are saved thanks to similar programs in breast cancer “.
Finally, Zarza has referred to two fundamental aspects when it comes to living closely with situations of this disease, such as family union as the most notable “positive” value and the loss of life of relatives, especially children, as a “negative value. “.
ALADINA FOUNDATION
The Aladina Foundation was established in 2005 at the initiative of the president, Paco Arango. Currently, this association helps more than 1,500 children, and families, in the 13 hospitals with which it collaborates, providing comprehensive support to children, adolescents and family members affected by childhood cancer.
In addition, the foundation already has a team of six psycho-oncologists who offer professional and free assistance. In the same way, they develop a physical exercise program inside and outside the hospitals.
