The official ballot result should not be known for several days, as all voters had the opportunity to vote by mail until election day itself.
But the count of almost all the polling stations showed Wednesday that Jamaal Bowman (44) was almost credited with the double votes of his main opponent, Eliot Engel, with 61% of the votes cast against 34%.
This success in a constituency won for the Democrats ensures this principal of a college in Yonkers, north of New York, to enter the House of Representatives at the end of the legislative ballot on November 3.
It’s the end of an era for Eliot Engel, who has served in Congress continuously for 31 years and was backed by Hillary Clinton and House Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi.

This promised victory echoes that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who had dethroned, in 2018, another Democratic figure in Congress, Joe Crowley, in a constituency located in Queens and the Bronx, New York.
Jamaal Bowman belongs to the same reformist line as “AOC” and has also adhered to his idea of a new environmental pact, the “Green New Deal”, presented in February 2019.
“As an educator and as a black man in the United States, I learned a lot and I try to relate that, my experience, with the voters”, explained the forty-something Wednesday during a conference of hurry.
