He had left Manchester City as a free agent just two weeks after leading – as captain – Guardiola’s side to their first ever Champions League and Treble legendary. Fourteen months later, Ilkay Gundogan he says goodbye to Barcelona, conditioned by the usual financial problems, and returns home.
During his first stop in England, the German midfielder won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, two Community Shields and the Champions League, making 304 appearances and scoring 60 goals. For Barcelona he played 51 games in all competitions and helped the Catalans to second place in LaLiga.
Now, at 33, he returns to City with the aim of helping the team win a fifth consecutive championship: “My seven years at Manchester City were a very happy time for me, on and off the pitch. I have become what I was. as a person and as a player, I developed a special relationship with the City fans and had incredible success. It was a special time in my life.
The opportunity to come back here means so much. Everyone knows how much I respect Pep: he is the best manager in the world and working with him every day makes you a better player. And what can I say about my teammates here at City… they are world class footballers. I am delighted to have the opportunity to train and play with them. I honestly can’t wait to wear the City shirt again.”
