Not only did we have a terrible incident in the subway this weekend, a woman was also pushed onto the tracks in the US when the subway arrived. The 40-year-old Michelle Alyssa was less fortunate. She was run over and died instantly. A 61-year-old homeless person has been arrested.

The epitome of senseless violence is what NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell calls the incident that happened in New York on Saturday. It shows striking similarities with the horrific attack on a woman on Friday evening in Brussels.

The incident happened at Times Square station in New York around 9:40 a.m., police said. Footage from surveillance cameras shows that the perpetrator is standing on the platform. First, he harassed another woman. But she manages to escape. But she sees shortly afterwards how he pushes another woman onto the tracks just as a subway car pulls up, says police chief Jason Wilcox.

Almost identical to what happened with us on Friday evening. With the difference that the STIB driver was able to carry out an emergency braking procedure, so that the metro came to a stop just in front of the woman.

Unfortunately, the driver in New York was unable to do that. The woman ended up under the subway and died instantly.

The perpetrator was quickly apprehended. He turned himself in. The victim is a 61-year-old homeless person. It is unknown what his motive was.

Just last week, Mayor and Governor Kathy Hochul announced a joint security plan to make the subway network safer. One of the points was just to remove homeless people from the metro because they are causing too much of a nuisance.

Police say it’s unclear whether the woman, who was of Asian descent, was attacked because of her ethnicity or if she was an accidental victim. The suspect admits that he did not know his victim.
