(CNN) – The innovative thinking of a woman from North Carolina saved her life when her hands were trapped while changing a tire on the side of the road on Sunday night.
The 54-year-old woman, whom authorities have not identified, was traveling on Interstate 95 in South Carolina when a wheel of her car was punctured, according to the Colleton County Fire Department. Charlotte’s wife, North Carolina, stopped in the lane of the road.
“He removed the flat tire and replaced it with the spare tire, when the cat slipped and the car fell, crushing both hands between the tire and the fender,” the fire department said in a statement.
I was trapped alone along the road with excruciating pain, the department said. For the next 35 minutes he was able to take off his shoe and, after many attempts, dial 911 with his toes.
Emergency crews that were in the area cleaning attending another accident arrived to release it but found a problem.
“They used a lever without success and then deflated the tire to remove the air, however, the car fell when the tire deflated,” the statement said. “Using the lever, they were able to release a hand.”
Another fire truck arrived and successfully released the woman’s other hand using a hydraulic spreader.
The woman suffered severe damage to both hands and all her fingers, the fire department said. She was transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
