Symptoms of the disease range from fever, nausea and vomiting, as well as headaches and stiff neck. If not treated in time, people can die in less than a week.

The amoeba usually inhabits hot fresh water and enters the body through the nose. However, it cannot be transmitted from person to person.

In this sense, Health officials urged citizens to avoid nasal contact with tap water and other sources of water, including open water reservoirs such as lakes, rivers, ponds and channels, among others.

They also noted that in July, August and September infections are more likely to be warm months.

At the country level, the United States only reported 34 infections due to this fact between 2009 and 2018.
