Rita Ebel has been confined to a wheelchair for 25 years. All this as a result of a traffic accident that would prevent him from walking again. Since then, the German has done everything possible to improve the accessibility of Hanau, the city in which she resides. Mainly after seeing how one of her friends had to be assisted by four people to leave an establishment that was not adapted, as explained to local media.
From that precise moment, the German decided to make Hanau a much more accessible city. Faced with the large number of inaccessible cafeterias and shops, Ebel began to build ramps so that both she and the rest of her friends could easily access the different establishments. Some ramps created from Lego pieces that not only allow you to access the different stores, but also make it possible to sensitize third parties about mobility without barriers: “Anyone could suddenly end up in a situation like mine”.

Since then, Ebel and her husband spend two to three hours a day building custom-made ramps, which are later installed in the different establishments of the city. A type of ramp, made up of hundreds of bricks, which are attached with up to eight tubes of glue to ensure that their sculptures do not crumble and prevent anyone from taking a single piece.
And, despite the fact that more and more people know Ebel’s work, some people try to take the pieces: “No one walks past a Lego ramp without taking a look at the ground. Whether it’s the children trying to get hold of one of the pieces or the adults pulling out their cell phones to take pictures. “
“It’s a brilliant idea”
Since then, Ebel is already known in the city as granny lego. For the moment, the German has installed ramps in twelve establishments in the city, although it will continue to make Hanau a much more accessible region. After the success of these ramps, those responsible for the shops have applauded the initiative of the woman.
However, Ebel acknowledges that it is increasingly difficult to find parts to create new ramps since many families do not want to part with them. For the same reason, the German has encouraged the inhabitants of the city to donate pieces so that she can continue with her dream. Meanwhile, and after the success of this initiative, more and more countries are interested in these platforms. Speaking to local media, Rita Ebel explains that she has sent the instructions to build ramps in countries like Austria and Switzerland so they can continue her legacy.
