“When you go for your first ultrasound, (the doctor) checks that everything is fine and determines the day of conception of the baby. That’s when theI was told they were conceived five days apart. I didn’t even know it could happen,” says Odalis. To make this estimate, the young mother’s obstetrician compared the sizes of the two fetuses. During pregnancy, it increases quickly enough to determine a date. .
If the phenomenon is rare, it is no less well known. This is superfluity. In other words, when a pregnancy occurs while another is already in progress. In most cases, this happens between a few days and a few weeks after the first fertilization, explains our English colleagues.
Only a dozen cases in the world
This story would not be complete without specifying that, earlier, the couple had experienced a miscarriage, at three months of pregnancy. “I feel lucky. I know a lot of women who have tried to get pregnant again after a miscarriage, but failed. I was afraid of it, but fortunately it was not our case“, rejoices the young woman now.
This is not the first time that this kind of pregnancy has happened in the world. In April 2021, a Briton even launched an Instagram account in the name of her two children. If there is no official census of these superfluities, a dozen cases have been publicized in recent years: in Australia, Uganda or even several in the United States.
