The man contacted the 39-year-old from Pongau via the social network Facebook that he was a soldier in the US Army and would need money so that he would not have to go to Afghanistan. The Salzburg native paid more than 26,000 euros into an American account and several Bitcoin accounts within two months. Then the contact broke off. The woman from Pongau informed the police. The Federal Criminal Police Office, IT specialists from the State Criminal Police Office and district investigators have recorded the surveys.
Perpetrators take advantage of the victim’s affection
In this form of fraud, the perpetrators take advantage of the supposed affection of women and men to induce the victim to make payments, the police warned. There are both female and male victims. A kind of relationship is simulated to the victims via phone calls, e-mails and social networks. The result is financial damage – often in large amounts.
