Is about Camila De Pamphilis, a young woman from Corrientes and industrial designer which developed an advanced and technological diagnostic system. He did it through software, which uses a artificial intelligence algorithm to detect breast cancer. Its development obtained international recognition and was awarded in the United States for the great innovation. Camila was recently honored in the top 100 of Visionaries in Health, an award given by the International Forum on Advances in Health in the United States. Currently, De Pamphilis plays as Mamotest Operations Director, the first Argentine Health Technology company to create a tele-mammography network to reduce mortality from breast cancer.
This young professional graduated as an Industrial Designer at the University of Buenos Aires and from that moment she dedicated herself to science. Always fighting for improvements in the health system. He worked for seven years in the field of technology and innovation in the public and private sector. He held various positions in the areas of Science and Technology and Smart Cities in the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, developing tools for the digitization of operations. At present it is one of the most important figures in the fight against breast cancer.
Cancer in numbers
According to official figures, breast cancer affects about 20,000 women each year in Argentina, which represents 31.8% of all cancers among women. In this sense, there are many control and prevention campaigns, although never enough. In this sense, it is important to emphasize that if diagnosed early, in 90% of cases it is curable. Taking into account this essential information, the young woman was inspired to develop this invention that speeds up the diagnostic process.
Four years ago, De Pamphilis managed to digitize breast study analysis systems and implement provincial mammography networks. All this in a framework of awareness and struggle so that a basic right is fulfilled in the best way: the right to health. Its influence and development served so that women and people with breasts from all provinces had free, high-quality mammograms. The diagnostic system he created works with an artificial intelligence algorithm to detect possible tumors in formation. What is striking about this project is that detects anomalies that are imperceptible to the human eye.
In the words of the designer: “In these years I focused on my work, to humanize health and make it more egalitarian. Containment and empathy with women in this area is essential, because it is still a sensitive issue for us ”, andCamila explained, adding: “From the first moment the goal was to connect, empathize with each of the women who arrived for studies, in order to be able to reach more of them and lose fear, as well as facilitate access. Today the best doctors in the country work with us studying images from a distance. Early diagnosis and treatment can save almost 90% of women, but today 52,000 die a year in Latin America due to lack of resources and care from the health system. The solution is simple, but it lacks priority ”.
In addition, he commented that he joined the Mamotest company because perceived sensitivity around women’s health: “Unfortunately many years women came to the office with advanced breast cancer, today with a study that takes no more than 15 minutes, this situation could be avoided ”.
There is no pandemic to slow it down
In times of quarantine and a global pandemic, Camila worked to keep the Mamotest centers operational. Since it is a service essential for the health system because the continuity of the studies ensures that the cancer cases do not advance.
In this context and thanks to the development of the industrial designer from Corrientes, Camila and her team They managed to increase the number of studies that women do in the places where they work by 600%. Since it started working, this system has already diagnosed about 360,000 patients. “About 2% of them are risky. Of those patients, 80% have cancer. And of that percentage, 90% managed to access a treatment in time that saved their lives “, explained.
Reflections of a conscientious professional: “It is time to take care of women’s health. Medical care must have a preventive approach rather than reactive to save millions of lives and billions in healthcare costs and treatments. Our education campaigns and generation of market demand are focused on this premise ”, Camila reflects, while inviting all women over 40 years of age to study once a year to live free of worries and in peace.
