A wolf kills nine sheep in the canton of Uri – the canton releases the animal to be shot
On Friday, the Directorate of Security issued an order to shoot a wolf. The number of faults has tripled this year.
The security department of Uri has authorized the shooting of wolves that move through the Ursern Valley. According to current knowledge, the wolf killed nine sheep on October 9 in the area of Schmidigen, in the border area between the communities of Hospental and Realp in the Urserntal. It must be expected that the wolf will attack other farm animals, the security team explained the measure.
According to the notice, a permit to kill a wolf that does not belong to a pack can be granted if six farm animals are killed within four months after the damage caused by wolves has already been recorded . However, the herds must be protected or they cannot be reasonably protected.
Damage threshold has been reached
The security directorate announced that the level of damage had been reached. The entire canton of Uri is a wolf presence area as wolf attacks on livestock have occurred in other years. According to the assessment of the Office of Agriculture, the agricultural area of Schmidigen is an area that is reasonably protected, which was protected by an electronic grazing network during the Wolfrisse.
The shooting license is limited to 60 days, or until no more livestock graze on the agricultural land within the shooting perimeter. The edge of the hunt corresponds to the area of the wolf in the area of agricultural land in Ursern. The Hunting Department of the Forestry and Hunting Office is responsible for implementing the hunting order. The cantonal wildlife management agencies and, if necessary, designated hunters are primarily responsible for shooting.
No wolf has been shot yet
Recently, a wolf was released for shooting in the canton of Uri on September 2. He killed seven sheep on Alp Kartigel in Meiental in Wassen. “The approval to launch within the launch perimeter defined at the time could not be done,” said Safety Director Céline Huber. This means that the wolf that caused the damage was not killed on the map. She cannot make any binding statement as to whether the animal released for shooting was the same wolf.
On June 24 this year, the security directorate ordered the shooting of a wolf that was causing damage. At that time, the wild animal killed at least 16 domestic goats on Alp Schweig in the Witenwassenteral in Realp. What was surprising at the time was that, just two days after the shooting order was issued, it was reported that the wolf had been killed by the cantonal game warden.. At the time, Céline Huber saw a possible reason for the unusually short time between the order and the actual shooting in the highly technical equipment of the game guard groups in charge of the case.
Almost three times higher than last year
Compared to last year, the number of animals killed by wolves in the canton of Uri has almost tripled. “Although there were 46 cracks last year, the number has already increased to around 120 cracks this year. Accordingly, the third firing order is now being issued this year,” said Céline Huber.
