“On Monday, April 29, the danger of fires will be high in the southwest of Moravia. Due to persistently high temperatures and increasing winds, the area with a high risk of fires will expand in the coming days in most of the Czech Republic, with the exception of the Zlín, Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian regions and the extreme southwest and west of Bohemia,” the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) said on Monday.
The risk is expected to decrease only on Friday, May 3 due to rain showers.
Meteorologists appealed to people not to light fires in nature, and especially in forests, where a moment is enough, a blown spark and misfortune can befall the world. People shouldn’t even burn grass or throw away cigarette butts. They should also not use portable stoves or other sources of open fire in nature.

The warning comes a day before the so-called witch burnings, which are inextricably linked to fire.
Ban on fires in the Central Bohemia region
The Central Bohemian Region has already issued a ban on making fires even in gardens. Veronika Mocová Švorcová, spokeswoman for the Central Bohemian Fire Department, said that this also applies to these events. With the announcement of the ban, the mandatory fire reporting system was automatically closed. The organizers can no longer report any new fires, and those who have already done so receive a ban notice from the fire department.
“We have contacts for everyone, so we inform them so that everyone really knows about it,” said the spokeswoman for the fire department, adding that if someone violates the ban, there is a risk of hundreds of thousands of fines.
For example, in the Central Bohemia region, the fire department usually reports about 3.5 thousand fires, which are traditionally lit on the evening of April 30. One of the many planned witches’ celebrations is, for example, in Mladá Boleslav on Krásná louce near the Jizera.
Winds of up to 70 km/h are expected
“Of course, we are not canceling the program, the bands are invited and contracted, attractions are prepared for children, so the program will be there, just the bonfire will not be lit,” assured Šárka Charousková, the spokesperson of the Mladá Boleslav municipality.
The detailed warning will apply from Tuesday to Thursday, May 2 for Prague, the entire Central Bohemian, South Moravian, Ústí, Liberec, Hradec Králové and Pardubice regions. Subsequently, for most districts of South Bohemia and parts of Karlovy Vary and Pilsen.
Wind gusts of up to 20 m/s (70 km/h) are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday in the area of the Českomoravská vrchovina and the Frýdlant ridge.
