A whale ran aground this afternoon in Sept-Îles Bay. The population tried to save her, in vain.
The mammal was discovered disoriented near the Rivière aux Foins. Alerted by the population, members of Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans wanted to help redirect it to deeper waters.
Several citizens also participated in the rescue attempt, as told in a post on Facebook by the director of the Sept-Îles Education and Research Center (CERSI), Anik Boileau. “She died in the arms of several members of the population who got dressed and jumped into the water in an attempt to hold her up so she could breathe. “
The whale was very thin according to several observers and was therefore doomed. According to the specialist Jacques Gélineau, the animal is a Gervais beaked whale.
