A well-known Iranian actress posts a photo of her without a veil on Instagram

Paris (AFP) – One of the most famous Iranian actresses has posted on social media a photo of her without a veil, a mandatory garment for women in the Islamic Republic.

Taraneh Alidoosti’s gesture, an apparent challenge to the Iranian regime, came after weeks of protests in the country following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who died in mid-September after being arrested by the moral police in Tehran accused of not respecting the current dress code.

Alidoosti, who had previously expressed his support for the protesters, posted a picture of himself bare-headed on his official Instagram account.

In the photo, he is holding a banner with the movement’s motto written in Kurdish: “Jin. Jiyan. Azadi”. (Woman, Life. Freedom.).

Alidoosti often works on films by award-winning director Asghar Farhadi, such as “The Salesman”, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017.

A few days ago, on Instagram, the actress stated that she would remain in her country and said that she intends to stop working in her profession to help the families of those killed or detained during the repression.

“I am the one who is here and I have no intention of leaving,” said the 38-year-old interpreter, denying that he has a residence abroad or a passport from another country.

“I will stay, I will stop working. I will accompany the families of the prisoners and the dead. I will be their advocate,” he said.

“I will fight from home. I will pay what I have to pay to defend my rights and, above all, I believe in what we are building together today,” he added.

Alidoosti is known for her advocacy for women’s rights in Iran.
