The number of infections and quarantines is relatively high higher in primary education, where children are in principle not vaccinated, and in the Brussels Capital Region, where vaccination coverage is much lower. In Brussels, for example, 348 students (0.64 percent) are positive, three times as many as in the rest of Flanders. In West Flanders there are 368 (0.18 percent), in East Flanders 612 (0.22 percent), in Antwerp 813 (0.24 percent), in Flemish Brabant 378 (0.21 percent) and Limburg 293 (0.19 percent).
“These figures confirm once again that vaccination really matters,” responds Flemish Minister of Education Ben Weyts (N-VA). “We will also keep our finger on the pulse this school year. We will continue to provide regular updates about the situation in our schools.”
Earlier this week, both Ben Weyts (N-VA) and Flemish Minister of Youth Benjamin Dalle (CD&V) argued for a more flexible test and quarantine policy in education. “Too many children have to miss school due to a possible exaggerated caution reflex,” says Weyts. “Children and their parents should not be victims of the testing and quarantine rules,” Dalle said.
