A pill that makes people urinate better may also help some people with autism and ADHD. This is the conclusion of research by Hilgo Bruining, child psychiatrist at the University Hospital of Amsterdam.
At the moment a number of people with ADHD are prescribed Ritaline, and a number of people with ASD are prescribed antipsychotics. To be clear, Bruining is not against that. “Sometimes it’s necessary. But what we point out is that this medication is not linked to a cause, but is designed to suppress behavioral symptoms.” So he went looking for an alternative. Bumetanide, also known as the water pill.
“It is not an autism treatment, but it can help to prevent overstimulation.”
