We assume that many of us know about the symptoms of cancer, but some signs may not be entirely obvious.
Bladder cancer is one of the most common types, especially in the elderly, with the majority of new cases diagnosed in people aged 60 and over.
Because symptoms can be quite vague, around a quarter of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, especially in women, and half of those affected die, according to the charity Action Bladder Cancer UK.
There are very few treatments for advanced bladder cancer, however, the cure and survival rate for this disease is 80% if caught early enough.
So it is important for people to know all the symptoms so that they can catch it in its early stages.
According to the Institute of Cancer Research UK, “swollen legs” are a common symptom of bladder cancer, according to the thesun newspaper.
Other common symptoms include:
blood in the urine;
Bone pain.
Abdominal pain.
wheezing.
Lumps in the stomach or neck.
Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice).
Less common symptoms of bladder cancer are:
The need to urinate frequently.
sudden urination
Burning sensation when urinating.
When should a doctor be consulted?
If you have blood in your urine, you should see a doctor so that proper treatment can be received.
Having blood in your urine doesn’t mean you definitely have bladder cancer.
There are many other more common causes including:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as cystitis.
Kidney infection.
Kidney stones.
Non-gonococcal urethritis.
Enlarged prostate gland in men.
