A special forces war dog insensitively abandoned by Russian soldiers has switched sides and is now saving Ukrainian lives.

Three-year-old Max was found starving and near death in an area that has seen some of the worst fighting since Vladimir Putin launched his invasion.

The Belgian Malinois was nursed back to health and turned over to Ukrainian troops.

Trained to understand Ukrainian, he now has a new life sniffing out booby traps and unexploded mines.

A member of Ukraine’s National Guard named Dmitry said: “From now on, Max will serve on the right flank, defending Ukraine and nibbling Russian asses.”

His comrade added: “Max has become a real favorite with the guards.

“We cannot understand why the Russians leave behind such a beautiful animal.

“Ukrainians love dogs, they consider them part of the family.”

Max was part of Kremlin troops who had captured a village in the Mykolayiv region near the Black Sea.

Dumped when Mad Vlad’s forces retreated, he survived by eating rotting food.

When he was found, he was still wearing a camouflage collar issued to Russian military dogs.

A British Special Forces soldier said: “Malinois are the same breed used by the SAS and the SBS. They are brave, highly intelligent, and athletic animals.

“They are enormously loyal, but Max was obviously convinced that the Ukrainians are now his new masters.”

He added: “I am very surprised that one of these animals was actually abandoned by the Russians because they are a prized commodity.

“The bond between dog and owner is also very strong.

“It would be like leaving a family member behind.”
