A volunteer cleaning initiative is giving new life to the Iskar River – 2024-09-24 07:59:51

This September, the Iskar-Sofia Association organized a public initiative for the improvement of a part of the Iskar River. The event, initiated by Diageo and Avendi, will take place on September 28 (Saturday) from 10.30 a.m., with a meeting point in the village of German, near Sofia. Cleaning the banks of the river, renovating the places of recreation – placing new facilities and renewing the appearance of the existing ones are some of the activities on which the initiative focuses.

The Iskar River, the longest river that flows entirely within Bulgaria’s borders, is a vital natural resource that supports diverse ecosystems and provides water to numerous communities. However, parts of the river have suffered from pollution and lack of care. The Iskar-Sofia Association, an independent, non-governmental organization entirely focused on the protection and sustainable development of the Iskar River basin from Lake Pancharevo to Tsarigradsko Shose, not only takes care of the regular cleaning of the river and its stocking with trout, but is also dedicated to the training of children in the preservation and protection of the river territory.

The global company Diageo and Avendi, the official distributor of Diageo brands in Bulgaria, are not only initiating the event, but will also donate funds for the further maintenance and improvement of the area.

“It is extremely important for us to preserve and improve the condition of the Iskar River, which is an integral part of our natural and cultural heritage. We are glad to have met partners such as the global company Diageo and their distributor Avendi, because their support enables us to get even closer to our goal of a clean and living river,” said Georgi Mutavdjiyski from the Iskar-Sofia Association.

Volunteers are wanted to refresh the area. Planned activities during the event on September 28 (Saturday) include clearing litter along the riverbank, painting existing facilities and building new benches to improve the relaxation spaces, both for local residents and all visitors.

Assembly point: Volunteers willing to get involved will receive all the necessary materials and tools after a short briefing by the organizers. The meeting point is in 10.30 a.m., in the village of German, at the following location: https://goo.gl/maps/JmzXk5SqNi5ix79cA

“It is important for us that all participants feel good and enjoy a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. We encourage them to bring friends to contribute to this meaningful cause and experience a day filled with community spirit. Our company has a long-term commitment to nature conservation and sustainable development through a number of global green initiatives. Our efforts include reducing carbon emissions, conserving water resources and reducing waste. Through such local projects as the one in Bulgaria, we continue to make a real change at the local and global level, that’s why throughout September, Johnnie Walker will donate BGN 2 from the value of each bottle sold to support the efforts of the Iskar-Sofia Association for cleaning the Iskar River. We believe that our long-term success is linked to the health and prosperity of our communities and the protection of the environment, so we are proud to be able to collaborate with such a noble initiative,” said Gergeli Abraham, Diageo’s Director of Corporate Communications for Eastern Europe.
