A virtual reality headset to entertain patients operated on at Amilly hospital

Virtual reality is not exclusive to video games. After three weeks of successful testing with a 3D helmet, the Center hospitalier de l’Agglomération montargoise (Cham), should soon be equipped with two virtual reality headsets for patients.

“The feedback we have is all good, from patients, doctors and nurses. We even had someone who fell asleep during the operation with the helmet on their face.”

Francois Garel
(coordinator of operating theaters in Cham)

Immersion in a 3D world

Thereby, around ten patients were able to try out virtual reality during a surgical procedure or even before, awaiting passage in the operating room.

Thanks to 3D, this technological tool makes it possible toalleviate the pain (during an injection, for example) by diverting the patient’s attention. It can also decrease the stress of the awake user during an operation with local anesthesia.

During the work of the Amilly hospital center, its helipad moves to Montargis

“With the helmet in front of his eyes, the patient is immersed in different settings: a forest, a beach, underwater or even a Japanese garden “, lists François Garel, in charge of deploying the tool at the hospital. The decor moves very little, in order to avoid possible nausea.

“This allows to entertain the patient, from divert his attention the environment of an operating room, so that he cannot see the instruments around him, for example. Instead, he focuses on elements of the decor that will show up in front of his eyes. “

The virtual reality headset is controlled by a tablet. Here in the hands of François Garel.

Always in contact with a caregiver

Even if the patient is immersed in his world, caregivers can still communicate with him, by sending him messages that will be displayed in the virtual reality headset.

“It is possible for the patient to also have headphones in the ears, to listen to certain music. But we still prefer that he does not have one so that we can always ask him questions: if all goes well, if he wants to stop the immersion “, specifies François Garel.

During the first weeks of use, a caregiver will stay at the bedside to ensure that the immersion proceeds correctly.

Amilly Hospital is progressing with its expansion work

3D is used more and more in hospitals in France as part of treatment protocols. At the Amilly hospital, this technology was already used by and for caregivers, during wellness sessions with the on-site intervention of partners.

Two helmets at first

Jean-Luc Davigo is the director of Cham: “Our teams are happy with the use of a 3D helmet. We plan to order two quickly initially for the operating theater department. And who knows, if other services request it, to increase this workforce. We have to go step by step. So far, helmets have been used exclusively by adult patients. Why not in the future acquire a helmet for children in the pediatric department?.”
