Muammar Gaddafi has ruled Libya for many decades, gaining both supporters and many enemies.
He is therefore forced to create an impenetrable defense around himself – especially after several collaborators betray him (they are, of course, executed). We are talking about an entire army, but we are only interested in a part of it – the “elite unit”, known by different names. They are officially called “war nuns” and the press calls them “Amazons”.
The department was formed in the early 70’s and 80’s, when Gaddafi began to create a fresh and modern image.
Although the “revolutionary nuns” first came to the public’s attention sometime in the early 1990s (before that East German experts were committed to defending Gaddafi), the “Amazons” tended to become a notable fighting unit. at the very end of the century.
According to one hypothesis, the Libyan leader surrounds himself with women because Arab men would not attack them. Or at least they would cause confusion. A significant increase in the number of female units in the militia is also in favor of this hypothesis. It is estimated that almost half of the Libyan army at one time are women.
True military training
According to the second hypothesis, everything has to do with Gaddafi’s ostentation and desire to make a show with his appearance.
This is evidenced by the fact that, unlike other women in the Arab world, many “nuns” have a “Western” look – hairstyles with loose hair, bright and varied clothes, wear shoes with heels and more. And from a psychological point of view, a woman, unlike a man, is not a “competitor” and therefore will not claim power.
Despite the features of the show in the appearance of the “Amazons”, their military training is completely real and professional. Before appearing before the head of state, they underwent an intensive training course at the military academy.
There, the girls (according to some sources, only virgins who have made a vow of chastity can serve the Brotherhood leader) become hand-to-hand combat specialists, perfectly proficient in various types of weapons – in the British press they are called “trained assassins”.
Girls who enter the service for ideological reasons and have not had sexual intercourse are less likely to betray their master.
The trained “cut diamonds” are sent to a meeting with Muammar Gaddafi, who, focusing on his own perception of beauty, chooses female employees to accompany him.
He then changed the names of all the girls to one – Aisha: this is the name of one of the dictator’s daughters. In response, the elected officials took an oath to defend the leader at the cost of their lives.
It is said that being in the first round of Gaddafi’s security is considered a great honor and a dream (the same dreams are expressed by the guards of North Korean leaders).
One of Gaddafi’s former bodyguards said in an interview after his death that he decided to go to work after the footage he saw on television: they showed the current security guards. According to her, everything looks very romantic, inspiring and the very fact that you can be next to the leader makes her tremble.
Threats and rapes
Gaddafi wanted to build a modern image in front of other world leaders.
Over time, however, more details have emerged about working in “special forces” – not all women are volunteers in the dictator’s service.
Some have been taken away from their families and forced to work under threat of repression if they refuse. “Either you become a bodyguard or your brother goes to prison for the rest of his life.”
Usually the “female detachment” follows its ruler during travels when it is required to be among the people. Most often there are 15 women in the escort team, and the rest are in reserve.
Outwardly, everything looks beautiful and noble, albeit “extravagant”, but according to former officials, some of them have been sexually abused by Gaddafi and his sons, as well as by generals and other senior government officials.
“For Gaddafi, rape is a weapon, a way to show his power over others – women and men (by raping their daughters and wives),” the Le Monde journalist said after talking to the women affected.
There is an example in the history of the “revolutionary nuns” when the “Amazons” were involved in a real battle. The incident occurred in 1998, when Muammar Gaddafi was shot dead by unknown individuals near the Libyan-Egyptian border.
One of the bodyguards covered him with her body and died, seven were injured. Since then, the ruler has not been hit by a bullet – perhaps the “revolutionary nuns” were really an effective unit?
Interestingly, the fall of Gaddafi’s regime was probably aided by a woman. The 24-year-old engineer, codenamed Nomidia, initially provided information about military facilities on an independent television channel and then transferred the data, accumulated over months of hard work, to the NATO military.
They used them in 2011 to destroy a number of objects, and Gaddafi is trying to hide. Nomidia goes unnoticed because of gender – how can a woman be dangerous? This delusion kills both the opponents of the Libyan dictator and himself.
