An apartment was ravaged by flames in the city center of Angers (Maine-et-Loire), on the night of Saturday October 12 to Sunday October 13, 2024. The fire started in an accommodation located on the second floor of a building before spreading to the roof and threatening a discotheque installed on the ground floor, reports The Western Mail. Around a hundred customers from the Le New-Yorkais nightclub were evacuated by emergency services but none were injured.
This fire mobilized 44 firefighters and 13 engines, coming from different barracks, indicates The Parisian. Although they were able to put out the flames, the firefighters suffered a lot of damage. A floor collapsed between the second and first floors of the building and a water leak flooded the ground floor, list The Western Mail.
Two people taken to hospital
Heavy renovation work will have to be undertaken in the coming weeks and the nightclub will remain closed. The disaster is believed to be of accidental origin and to have started from a bedside lamp. The two occupants of the apartment were transferred to Angers University Hospital after being bothered by the smoke. They were rehoused by the municipality while waiting to return to their accommodation.
