Klaus Gessing is a multi-instrumentalist, composer who looks at improvisation from different angles in his work, focusing on creating music in the present moment. He has collaborated with famous musicians such as Michael Abene, John Hollenbeck and Bob Bruckmeyer. The prestigious jazz portal All about jazz in a review he described Gessing as “one of those jewels that catches the eye from the first moment of sight”.
Klaus Gessing graduated with honors from the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague, specializing in classical and jazz saxophone. He also studied with David Liebman. Gessing won the prize for best soloist in several international competitions: the Vienna International Jazz Competition (1996), the Middelzee Jazz Festival (1994) and the Van Merlen Jazz Award (1995). The musician has a long association with pianist Glauko Veniers and singer Norma Winstoni, culminating in several albums for the record company. ECM And universal under the wing. Ana Pilata is a Croatian jazz singer and lyricist, former soloist of the Trieste Old Jazz Orchestra. In 2021 G. Tartini graduated from the Trieste Conservatory in jazz singing with full marks. After her graduate studies in psychology, she started a training program School of Discovering the Voice, focusing on the connection between voice, physical and mental health. Currently, Ana Pilata lives in Finland, where she teaches various music workshops and continues her studies of jazz vocal pedagogy.
Joint program of both artists Music for voice and big band focuses on two characteristics of Klaus Gessing’s music: irregular and energetic rhythms and a love of poetry. The program includes several songs with lyrics by Norma Winstone. Gessing says, “Ana Pilat fills these songs with wonderful warmth. She is able to combine the necessary simplicity of performance with exquisite drama and elegantly brings both melody and lyrics to life.” Gessing also arranged a Greek folk song for a big band and created several compositions that grew out of the subtleties of chamber music, using the splendid sonic bouquet of a big band.
