England manager Gareth Southgate said he was “very pleased” after his side drew 0-0 against a good United States side at the World Cup on Friday.

“Personally, I am very satisfied with the commitment of the players against a very tough opponent. Coming out of such a high performance (like against Iran) and regaining such quality was still difficult. I think we controlled the game well and the two central defenders were very good at having such control with the ball at their feet against the American pressure.
We lacked quality in the last third and didn’t create the gaps to create as many chances as we wanted. But we defended our area very well, even from every free kick and that’s exactly what we need to go far in the World Cup. The players were very disappointed at the end of the match, but I told them they had a taste of what awaited them for the rest of the tournament. »
