With more than 257,655 overnight stays between January and June 30, 2022, the crowd is approaching that of 2019, a historically high year for Chartres. Compared to last year impacted by the Covid, the City reports an increase of 32% in the first quarter and 60% in the second quarter.

The campsite is also experiencing an increase in attendance. “The installation of the new managers, the renovated sanitary facilities and a grocery store selling local products symbolize this revival,” says Philippe Rossat, general manager of the Chartres Métropole Tourist Office.

“This influx of tourists makes it possible, thanks to the tourist tax, to offer €600,000 to the agglomeration, part of which is donated to the tourist office. This allows it to be able to operate with only 20% of subsidies, ”explains the general manager. The tourist pays for tourism. The less we are subsidized, the better off we are. It costs less to the community,” says Philippe Rossat.
“Asian tourists have not yet returned”
“We find the historic levels of international tourists before the health crisis. The Asian and especially Japanese tourists who made up a large part of our clientele have not yet returned as before. We are confident and serene about their return. Chartres is very popular with Japanese tourists,” said the general manager. Asian tourists have not yet returned en masse to Chartres. The number of people welcomed is six times greater than last year. The groups are seven times higher than in 2021.
“It is the result of working in cooperation with all the players in the sector. The interest is collective” declares the managing director. The average length of stay in Chartres is about two nights in a hotel, in a guest room or via digital operators (platforms like Airbnb). For campsites, the average duration is three nights.
Do you know the RoadBook, this new device that makes life easier for tourists in Chartres?
“The objective is to reach three nights for hotels and Airbnb, aims Philippe Rossat. We offer a personalized welcome to everyone and the range of activities allows visitors to enjoy longer stays than before. »

Going out in Eure-et-Loir and south-Yvelines: our three favorites for this Thursday, July 28
The tourist office has also created a new tool, “Create your personalized travel diary in five questions”. It allows you to plan your stay thanks to key questions.
Privileged activities
In addition to the cathedral, which attracts an average of 1.5 million visitors each year, other activities are very successful.
The International Stained Glass Center continues to be one of the city’s tourist showcases. Almost always complete, the visits to the Picassiette house, “Quand la nuit choit” (guided night visit), the crypt with the led candle, and the nuggets and secrets of Chartres are truly coveted.
According to the tourist office, karting, tree climbing and the Odyssey aquatic complex are also highly sought after by tourists.
“Whether by French or international tourists, Chartres appears as an emblem of little France. The city combines the aspects of heritage tourism and soft tourism and disconnection, so sought after since the post-Covid in a dynamic city ”judges Philippe Rossat.
“We came especially for her”: in summer, Chartres Cathedral is still so popular with tourists
