a user’s screen split into several parts

After using it for a week, a user’s foldable Motorola RAZR began to show problems. Its screen split in two at the fold, to affect the operation of the touch screen.

While it won’t be released until March for the general public, Motorola’s first folding smartphone is already showing signs of fragility. In a first stress test of CNET.com, the hinge of Motorola RAZR had thus sold after 27,000 openings / closings, where the Galaxy Fold from Samsung had held no less than 120,000 cycles last year. Aware that this type of test does not really reflect the daily use of such a device, the youtubeur JerryRigEverything had then, as usual, submitted the latest Motorola smartphone to its battery of usual tests: cutter, sand and lighter. Inevitably, the foldable smartphone had finally given in, even if it was noted that it had done rather well in view of the torture which was inflicted on it.

On the other hand, where the resistance of the Motorola RAZR may well leave something to be desired, it’s over time. In our first grips, we had indeed noted a fairly pronounced space between the hinge and the flexible slab when the smartphone was folded, which presented the risk of inadvertently introducing debris which could eventually damage the screen. Worse still, since the flexible laminated screen developed by Motorola uses several layers of material all held together by adhesive, we imagine it can separate under high tension.

This has not failed, since in only one week of use, a blog reporter Inputmag called Raymond Wong saw his RAZR’s screen split in two, in terms of thickness. “The touch screen part is half broken, touching gives virtually no response on the distorted surface, especially when you have to select something from a list like the list of options in the smartphone’s Settings menu. The top and bottom of the screen, which have not yet split, are still working, but the middle is almost unresponsive “ he explains on Inputmag.

According to him, the fault could be caused by a sudden change in temperature, which could have come to damage the slab, and thus cause the layers to come off between them in the center: “The only cause I see is the temperature changes. So I took eight photos with the smartphone. It was freezing outside with temperatures between -2.2 ° C and -1.1 ° C (…), then I went home and used it for less than an hour. My apartment is warm but not overheated (…). So, going outside with temperatures around 4 ° C could have triggered a kind of reaction which had the effect of peeling off the adhesive “.

Before condemning Motorola’s smartphone, we should note that this is only an isolated case. The flexible screen technology is also very new, which means that it is not yet free from faults. Manufacturers are however trying to improve it in their own way, like Samsung, which has developed a very specific type of glass for its recent Galaxy Z Flip, to make the screen more pleasant to the touch, even if this one is not unanimous. Despite everything, for a price of 1699 euros, we expect Motorola RAZR resistance worthy of its positioning, despite its average performance …
