a user blocked for 6 months because of her last name ?!

iCloud is a really great service. Thanks to it, we can easily synchronize data between an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac, but also access our online documents and edit them in a few clicks without needing to install anything.

Yes, iCloud is a really handy service, except when it gets tangled up in the carpet.

What seems to be furiously the case here since a user pretends that she was unable to access her account for 6 months due to a bug relating to her last name.

When your last name prevents you from accessing iCloud

Rachel True, that’s the name of the unfortunate one, has never had any problem with her name and the services she uses, but everything has changed recently following an update to iCloud.

For nearly six months, she was in fact unable to access her account and documents stored online. Each time she tried to identify herself, the service returned a cryptic error message, an error message visibly linked to her name:

“REPORTED ERROR TITLE. Type Error : cannot set value ‘true’ to property ‘lastName’”

If you’re not a developer at heart, then you might not know anything about Booleans. To put it simply, a boolean is a type of variable that can take two states… namely “true” or “false”.

The magic of booleans

Originally, moreover, Booleans were not born with computer science. They were indeed invented by George Boole in the mid-19th century and were originally used in algebra.

Still, Booleans do a great service to developers and they allow, for example, to create conditions.

However, here it seems that the script used to identify the iCloud account has taken the name of this user literally, seeking to set a condition where there was none.

The craziest thing in history is that Rachel True also explains that she spent hours on the phone with Apple support, but failed to resolve the problem. A counselor would have even advised her to take the name of her husband to permanently solve the problem.
