COPENHAGEN – A United States (US) nuclear powered submarine has been reported to have entangled fishing nets off the northern coast Norway . This made a local fisherman famous, but ruined his catch.

Oygutt, a fishing vessel based in Tromso, had brought in about 200 kg of halibut on Monday morning and was setting its nets again in the hope of getting the same catch. Instead, captain Harald Engen captured a 7,800-ton missile submarine.

“We were on our way back to the Sommaroya fish farm when we were called by the Coast Guard,” Engen told Norwegian television station NRK. “A submarine has gotten into our halibut fishing nets, and dragged them two nautical miles north out to sea.”

All that was left of the expensive equipment was the float. “The net is at the bottom of the sea,” said Engen, 22. “The net is gone, and we may never find it again.”

Coast Guard spokesman Kenneth Dahl confirmed to NRK that the boat had encountered a submarine.

The culprit appears to be the USS Virginia, a fast attack submarine powered by a nuclear reactor and armed with cruise missiles, Norwegian media reported. The ship visited Tromso as part of a campaign to “confront the increasingly complex High North security environment,” the US Navy said in a statement.

A 115-meter-long submarine propeller was caught in Engen’s nets on Monday, but it took several days for Norwegian media and the US Navy to acknowledge what had happened.

A spokesperson for the US 6th Fleet, Lieutenant Pierson Hawkins, told Business Insider that the incident was under investigation, and would not confirm the name of the vessel involved. “I’ve heard of other ships going through the nets, but nobody here has ever heard of a submarine doing that,” Engen told NRK, admitting that it would make a very interesting story in a house. village pub

While it’s not difficult to face America, Engen said he hopes the expensive equipment will be replaced. He may need to take care of some paperwork first.

According to Hawkins, “when the US is responsible for damage to civilian equipment, there is a claim process to recover costs.”

Norway is a founding member of NATO, and borders Russia at the North Pole. The US has again sent naval vessels to the area, apparently in response to Russian naval activity.
