A union representative tries to set himself on fire in front of the H&M site in Le Bourget in Seine-Saint-Denis

A union delegate from the H&M site in Le Bourget tried to end his life on Tuesday morning by wanting to set himself on fire after a meeting about the closure of the place. His days are not in danger.

A 38-year-old union representative attempted to commit suicide by setting himself on fire in front of the H&M Logistics GBC site in Le Bourguet on Tuesday, October 26.

“We were in a meeting which he was attending. After 45 minutes, we heard a big boom, it was a stone thrown at the window of the meeting room. I noticed that my colleague had left. We then saw him douse himself with gasoline. Colleagues had the presence of mind to tackle him to the ground, he had a lighter in his hand. We narrowly avoided a tragedy.”explains Gemina Mehiaoui, CGT union representative.

The man, also a union representative, is 38 years old and is the father of two young children. He was transported to the emergency room of Avicenne in Bobigny. In the middle of the afternoon, he was able to get out, his days not being in danger.

153 jobs threatened by site closure

This gesture comes in a context of generalized strike on this place of the clothing giant which receives the goods manufactured in the various foreign sites of the group.

“He was obviously exhausted. We have been on strike for three weeks. We are working in degraded conditions. We are not even allowed access to our social premises. Nothing is being done to ensure that the negotiations are going well”continues Gemina Mehiaoui.

Management announced last spring the upcoming closure of the Bourguet site. 153 jobs are threatened.
