Ukraine is one of the most important grain producers in the world. Wheat, corn and barley are mainly grown and exported there. If a major exporter like Ukraine fails, it could have a serious impact on global food security. It is one of the most serious consequences of the war between Russia and this country.
To improve the production and quality of wheat, Tetiana Tretiakova has carried out the research work entitled “Improvements in fertilization to increase yield and protein in wheat.”

Tetiana Tretiakova, of Ukrainian nationality, is a refugee who arrived in Spain in the spring of 2022, just after the war began in her country, and was welcomed by the teaching staff of the Higher Technical School of Agronomic and Forestry Engineering and Biotechnology of Albacete of the UCLM. As a refugee, she was admitted to the Doctorate in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, joining the research activity through different project contracts, which has allowed her to successfully complete her doctorate.
In her presentation, Tretiakova shows, through outstanding field work, the improvement in yield and grain quality in wheat cultivation in Luhansk, Ukraine, which has been obtained with fractional and frequent nitrogen application techniques. Likewise, it evaluates different tools to estimate the best doses of nitrogen fertilizers in the Albacete and Luhansk area, taking into account the differences in soils and environmental conditions.
The research has been directed by UCLM professor, Alfonso Calera, who has highlighted everything he has learned as a teacher accompanying Tetiana on this path, which goes beyond technical contributions.
