A Ukrainian journalist has died. Wiktoria Roszczyna died in captivity

Petro Jacenko announced on state television that the death of Wiktoria Roszczyna was confirmed as unfortunate. He emphasized that it was still too early to talk about the circumstances of this tragedy.

Jacenko also expressed sadness, recalling that Roszczyna was still creating journalistic materials in 2022. He admitted that her death is a great loss not only for all Ukrainian journalism.

Andriy Yusov, spokesman for the military intelligence of Ukraine (HUR), confirmed in an interview with Suspilne portal that Wiktoria Roszczyna was due to return to Ukraine in one of the upcoming prisoner exchanges. Before her return, she was to be taken to the Lefortovo detention center in Moscow. Yusov said that information about her death is still being confirmed.

Belsat reports that Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, a Ukrainian member of parliament and chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Freedom of Speech Committee, informed the Ukrainian media that Victoria’s father, Volodymyr Roschyn, received official notification of his daughter’s death.

Wiktoria Roszczyna disappeared last summer when she was working on a documentary about the lives of the residents of the areas occupied by the Russians. It was only in May this year that Moscow admitted that she had been arrested and that the woman was in Russian captivity. Belsat reminds that the journalist was previously detained in the residential areas at the beginning of the full-scale attack, but then he was quickly released.

The journalist worked at the Hromadske portal. On August 3, 2023, information was provided about her disappearance in the areas of Ukraine occupied by Russian forces. The head of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, Serhiy Tomilenko, said that her father was the first person to learn about her capture by Russian forces.

The circumstances of the journalist’s death have not been disclosed.
