unknownA tribute following the death of Cheems
NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 05:09
You probably didn’t know his name, but chances are you’ve seen him pass by on social media: meme dog Cheems. The animal, which appeared in countless images, died in surgery last Friday.
Memes are pictures with often funny texts that are shared online. Cheems was often depicted seated. Other dogs of the Shiba Inu breed are also often used in memes.
The dog, whose real name is Balltze, had had cancer for some time. “He fell asleep on Friday morning during his last surgery,” writes his owner on Instagram. “The plan was to get him chemotherapy or other treatment after this surgery, but it’s too late now.”

“Don’t be sad,” continues the owner, who lives in Hong Kong. “Please think of the joy Balltze brought to the world. A Shiba Inu with a round smiling face connected you and me and helped many people through the pandemic.”
Balltze resembles another well-known dog of the same breed, which appears even more often in memes: Kabosu. That dog can even be seen on the battlefield in Ukraine. Kabosu is also a symbol for the Dogecoin, a popular crypto currency.
But it goes with that animal too not good. Kabosu has liver problems and leukemia, but would be on the mend.
The two dogs are also featured on memes together. Kabosu (Doge) is often depicted as a strong figure and Balltze (Cheems) as his weaker counterpart:
