“A train has to stop every half hour at every station”

Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo) wants it in every station a train stops every thirty minutes. In the major stations, he thinks that even every ten minutes.

A train every half hour at every station. That is the goal of Federal Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo). In this way he hopes that more people will exchange the car for public transport. “In the contract with the NMBS, more emphasis should be placed on availability of trains and staff outside peak hours, especially in the evenings and on weekends”, says Gilkinet. “Train passengers must be more spread out and I will have research investigated how rates can play a role in this.”

Moreover, according to European regulations, competition must be allowed for SNCB by 2023. Until now, NMBS has ruled with a monopoly over the tracks. In the coming years, two pilot projects will be launched to enable liberalization on the rail network in Belgium.
