Five Connecticut siblings, ranging in age from 8 to 17, were killed in a serious car crash on a New York highway Sunday morning, police said.
Authorities believe the vehicle, a Nissan Rogue, was being driven by a 16-year-old boy when it veered off a highway in Scarsdale, crashed into a tree and went up in flames.
“Five Connecticut youth were killed this morning in a crash on Hutchinson River Parkway. Our condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident,” the Westchester County Police Department said on its Twitter page.
A school official told reporters that they are five siblings who had just moved to New Haven County, upstate New York.
A 9-year-old boy was the only survivor, according to a statement provided by Kieran O’Leary, a Westchester Police spokesman.
The minor “apparently was riding in the cargo area or rear window, and escaped” from the burning vehicle, the statement said.
The boy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The five minors who lost their lives are four men and one woman. Their identities have not yet been revealed. Police said they are all from Connecticut.
Matt Conway, a school superintendent in Derby, Connecticut, said he learned the deceased children were part of a family that recently moved to New Haven County from New York but had not enrolled in local schools.
Conway said he reached out to the father of the victims on Sunday and offered to provide him with information about supports available in the community for him and his family. She said that she planned to contact him again this Monday.
“It is the unimaginable. Having to make arrangements now to bury five of her children is a very difficult thing for anyone,” Conway lamented.
Police said the vehicle crashed at around 12:20 am (local time). The incident remains under investigation.
Derby is approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Scarsdale.

With the arrival of the end of the year, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has announced that there will be zero tolerance for people in a state of intoxication who drive on the streets and highways of the state. It is important to remember that if you are going to drink, you should not drive otherwise you may cause an accident or, if you are caught behind the wheel intoxicated, you may receive expensive mulattas and your license may be suspended.
