A tragedy at a mine in the DRC. At least 50 miners may have been killed in the accident

Probably at least 50 miners were killed on Friday 11 September in the afternoon in an accident at a small gold mine near the town of Kamituga in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), one local NGO said.

As a result of heavy rain, the shaft of the mine, operating without a license, where gold was extracted by traditional, so-called artisanal methods, collapsed.

At the time of the accident, there were over 50 young miners underground.

The old ways of extracting raw materials used by miners in the DRC, especially in small, mostly illegal mines, do not meet any mining safety rules and are the cause of many accidents in this sector.
