At the beginning of 2026, the household electricity market will be liberalized.
Each will pay differently according to their contract with the supplier.
The economic and social council came out with an analysis, which says that upon entering the free electricity market, some consumers may lose their welfare. One of the authors Bogomil Nikolov commented to BNR:
“The law provided for the creation of a registry of the energy poor. However, this has not yet been done. First of all, the Ministry of Social Affairs must prepare such a registry. For effective policies to happen, there must be coordination with others. First of all, this is the Ministry of Energy”.
According to Eurostat data from 2022, Bulgaria is in first place among the countries of the European Union in terms of the share of people who cannot keep their homes adequately warm – over 20% of households.
“The prices for each of us will be different because we will have different contracts. Some users may benefit from this process, and others may fall into the traps of unscrupulous traders.”
Therefore, it is demanded that the state develop model contracts, and also that the marginal electricity prices continue to be determined by KEVR, and not by the government, so that the regulator will retain its control function and will be able to withdraw licenses from unscrupulous electricity traders.
