Three people were killed and 10 others injured after a tornado tore through Brunswick County, North Carolina late Monday, local authorities said.
–
The tornado hit a residential community hard, leaving several houses totally or badly damaged, said Ed Conrow, director of Brunswick County Emergency Services, during a news conference early Tuesday morning.
–
“This is something different than what I have ever seen,” Ingram told reporters. “It is going to be a long recovery process.”
–
Throughout the morning, rescue teams and firefighters from Wilmington deployed a search operation for missing or trapped people inside their homes.
–
Conrow ruled out that there were missing persons, although he indicated that the emergency teams will continue their tasks for a while longer.
–
“That search is probably going to last several hours this morning and I hope it goes into the afternoon tomorrow,” added Conrow.
–
During the early hours of Tuesday, search and support personnel were going house to house in the Ocean Ridge Plantation community, in order to rescue trapped people.
–
Numerous homes were seriously damaged. Some were uprooted from their foundations. Many trees were split in half.
–
Previously, the Wilmington Office of the National Weather Service reported structural and power line damage and urged people to avoid the area.
–
At 1:00 am, the Leland Fire Department posted on Facebook that its units were responding by assisting Ocean Isle Beach in search and rescue operations.
–
“Please stay home and stay out of the area,” the department wrote.
