‘The Adam Project’, which premiered on Netflix on March 11, has become (as expected) the platform’s latest worldwide success. A full cast led by Ryan Reynolds y Zoe Saldana (in which we can see Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo back together almost twenty years later after ‘If I Had 30’), in addition to an entertaining science fiction comedy script are two of its strongholds.
‘The Adam Project’ is the second film in less than a year in which filmmaker Shawn Levy (saga of ‘Night at the museum’, ‘Stranger Things’) dirige a Ryan Reynolds. His previous feature film, the nice ‘Free Guy’was a late-summer hit, though it didn’t set the bar too high in the comedy world.
We are in 2022 and Adam (little Walker Scobell) is taking a beating from the class bullies: He is the typical somewhat nerdy geek who has not yet given the growth spurt. It’s not his best run for a kid who just lost his father in a car accident, because they end up expelling him from school. Her mother (Jennifer Garner) doesn’t know what to do with the boy, who stands out for not doing what she is told; all she can do is go ahead and share his sorrows with his favorite waiter.
Over time, Adam will become a man (Reynolds) who escapes from the bad guys by piloting a quantum superplane through a wormhole, traveling back 30 years to land in his old backyard. A backyard full of memories of ‘ET’ in which you could even find the Ewoks and that will end up being used to hide the super plane and so that Adam, while he heals a gunshot wound, listens to his father’s old records.

Did you think the plot was a bit bizarre? There is still more: the mere invention of time travel has something to do with human society has become a hellish dunghill by 2050, aggravated by the presence of Maya Sorian (Catherine Keener), an evil lady of technology.
When you thought that ‘The Adam Project’ could not curl the loop anymore, mentions of the “flow of time” and things like that begin to be incorporated, and you do not know if you are in ‘Back to the Future’ or in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The plot will then introduce us to Mark Ruffalo as Adam’s father and Zoe Saldana as his future wife, although both are supposed to be dead. It wasn’t a time travel movie, was it?
We’ve talked about ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Back to the Future’, ‘ET’, but Steven Spielberg’s influences are very marked: ‘Encounters of the Third Kind’, ‘War of the Worlds’, ‘Ready Player One’ … As for The highlight of the film is the child Walker Scobell, an actor with a great capacity for comedy and emotional depth.

‘The Adam Project’ draws on topics that we have already seen in other films, so it does not give the impression of being an original idea. It ends up being a somewhat bland mix of buddy comedy, action movie and time travel saga is all too familiar. The direction has opted for fast action despite the fact that the chase and fight sequences are quite passable.
It is a film in which there is nothing particularly in the plot, nor is it disliked. It meets the expectations that Netflix and a viewer put on it, but we would be very surprised if, in a time travel in a few years, some viewer remembered her.
