The number of corona deaths has increased dramatically across Europe, Peter Piot, Belgian Special Adviser to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, said Wednesday. “In the last week, that number was a third higher than the week before. That means that about a thousand people die from Covid every day, ”says Piot.

“The situation is very serious and threatens to get worse if we don’t take urgent and drastic measures,” he says. Piot wants many more people in Europe to wear mouth and nose masks. “We need to get to about 95 percent, instead of the current 60 percent. That could save hundreds of thousands of lives if we do that. ”
Long-term efforts are needed in the fight against the pandemic, it says. A safe vaccine, in a sufficient quantity, must be developed. But health and the economy must not be played off against each other. Only when the pandemic is over can the economy flourish, says Piot.
Von der Leyen’s advisor warns that in the meantime many are also long-term ill from Covid-19 and experience long-term effects. “And I know what I’m talking about. I’ve had it myself for months, ”says Piot.
