A third of all doctors in our country are considering quitting

④ BELGA

More than six out of ten doctors give in a survey of the doctors newspaper, about which Tomorrow Thursday reports that this government has dealt with the corona crisis badly. About a third of those surveyed are considering leaving the profession.

Has the government handled the pandemic the right way? A large majority of the doctors surveyed do not think so. Of the 1,130 respondents, 38 percent think the result is poor, another 24 percent think the approach is very poor. Only a quarter said the government did a good job.

A third of the doctors surveyed indicate that they are not sure that they want to continue with the profession. That is a very painful observation because our country is already struggling with a shortage of General Practitioners, among others.

The ratio of Dutch-speaking and French-speaking respondents is approximately the same in the survey, but it is unclear whether the survey is scientifically representative. The doctors newspaper generally has a slightly older audience. “This survey had no scientific pretensions, ” says Geert enrichen, editor-in-chief of the medical newspaper. “But overall, the big trends in the results are clear.”

Vandenbroucke

Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) narrowly receives an insufficient in the survey. Yet four in ten show themselves in favor of Vandenbrouck’s plans to significantly revise the fees of doctors. This will be especially negative for doctors who earn a lot because they work with high-tech resources.

“Four out of ten doctors think it’s a good idea to tinker with the remuneration of their own profession, that’s not a little,” says enrich. “I think that Vandenbroucke has a means of pressure to continue his plan.” About 30 percent think the proposal is bad or very bad.
