Supplying on demand is certainly one of the most important challenges facing all car manufacturers today. With the arrival of all-electric models and a multiplication of the offer, the order has never been so heavy.
With that in mind, Nissan is considering adding a new plant in the United States, specifically to meet growing demand for electric models. At least that’s what senior company executive Ashwani Gupta told reporters Friday at the company’s offices in Yokohama, Japan.
“It might not be a surprise if we went to a third factory,” he said.
Nissan currently operates two plans on American soil, one in Canton, Mississippi, the other in Smyrna, Tennessee. The first notably assembles the Altima sedan, while the second manufactures the LEAF and the Pathfinder, among others. Both employ thousands of workers and have been responsible for assembling millions of vehicles for Nissan since their inception.

As for the third plant in the company’s sights, it is unclear what form it will take. It could be completely independent of the other two, or even attached to one of them. We would of course be talking about adding thousands of jobs, but that is not for tomorrow either.
Several things remain to be analysed, if one takes the time to read between the lines of Ashwani Gupta’s declarations. According to him, the importance of the place where certain models will be prepared will increase from year to year. Depending on the region, incentives may be in place for the sale of electric vehicles, which may influence where they should be assembled. The exchange rate can also make local production more desirable.
Of course, we will have to take the time to see what will happen at Nissan over the next few years, especially with the arrival of other new electric models. The first in line is the Ariya SUV, which we will have the opportunity to test later this year.
