A theory about Captain America and Red Guardian

July 2021 was marked by the release of the highly anticipated Black Widow. This feature film that stars Natasha Romanoff, played by Scarlett Johansson, introduced new characters to the MCU. One thinks in particular of Yelena Belova, Melina Vostokoff and Alexei Shostakov interpreted respectively by Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbor.

A few days ago, the Screen Rant site put forward a theory concerning the character played by the latter. Those who have seen the film will remember that Red Guardian kept proclaiming loud and clear that he had already fought with Captain America, whose role is played by Chris Evans. Red Guardian is, however, known to embellish its stories. It is therefore difficult to know if what he says is true or not.

Yet a theory that has surfaced recently suggests that he may be telling the truth.

A meeting that marked Red Guardian

In Black Widow, Red Guardian repeats many times that he once faced Steve Roger aka Captain America. During a scene where he was still in prison, while he was in full swing with another inmate, he claims to have fought the superhero in the 1980s.

When his co-inmate questions his words by saying that it is impossible, because at that time Captain America was frozen in ice, Red Guardian decides to break his wrist. Then, when he manages to escape from the prison thanks to Yelena and Natasha, he asks the latter if Steve Rogers has ever spoken to him about him. We can say that this meeting with the super-soldier (if it really took place) marked Red Guardian.

A theory supported by the events of Avengers Endgame

Indeed, in the 80s, Captain America was frozen under the ice. However, if we look at the events of Avengers Endgame, it is possible that he really crossed paths with Red Guardian. In this feature film, Steve Rogers goes back in time to return the Infinity Stones.

Fans believe he may have taken a detour to the ’80s during his time travel. So it could be that he actually got into a fight with Red Guardian. Although he was supposed to keep a low profile, he could very well have continued to fight crime secretly during this time.

This theory remains to be verified, however, but it has the merit of opening up the field of possibilities.
