The pandemic prompted the performing arts to create alternative spaces for their performances.
And in the case of Taxilandia, the theater is a car that takes its passengers through the streets of Bushwick.
As a journey through the past and present of the neighborhood, its creator Modesto ‘Flako’ JiménezAdd your personal experiences to create this immersive traveling experience. And it is that this protagonist worked 9 years as a taxi driver in New York City.
Of course, being a taxi, the space is limited. But for those attending, Jiménez already has a route outlined and his stops in which he reviews the impact of his neighborhood in the face of gentrification, which has an increasingly imminent advance in Bushwick.
Activist by nature, this creator of Dominican origin, has also raised a series of events in addition to the taxi ride, so that the inhabitants of the area can access art, “even if one does not have money”:
- Virtual rooms, to discuss aspects of art and how it impacts its participants.
- Galleries, located in five different neighborhood businesses
- Textilandia, a walk where the viewer receives text messages on their cell phone.
Taxilandia comes to New York thanks to the collaboration of various organizations: Oye Group, New York Theater Workshop, The Bushwick Starr and The Tank. And it will be running until the beginning of May, with the possibility of extending its season.
Tickets are $ 25 and are obtained through a lottery by visiting the site: taxilandia.com
