The measure had already been implemented during the attacks of September 11, 2001, and coincides with the declaration of state of emergency signed a little over a week ago by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
As of Thursday more than 33,000 cases have been confirmed in New York State, an increase of more than 5,000 in less than 24 hours.
