The increase in the number of migrants is explained by the decision of the Belarusian authorities to return migrants to their countries of origin. However, in the hope of still entering the European Union, some migrants are trying to cross the Latvian border after failing to enter Poland and Lithuania.
“Of course, not all people agree to return [mītnes zemē]. Belarusians, as we understand it, give quite ultimate deadlines.
These are two to three days for people to either travel to European countries or return to their home country. [..]
Of course, we have also interviewed returnees, from whom we have obtained information that they have made such attempts at the Lithuanian-Polish border before attempting to enter Latvia. As such a trend can be wavy both here and in Poland and Lithuania, “explained Ivars Ruskulis, Deputy Chief of the State Border Guard.
A border guard spokesman also said migrants had damaged the temporary fence. A hole has been cut in it, through which it is possible to slip. However, the fence is still an effective means of deterring migrants, and the border guard will have no problem repairing it.
CONTEXT:
In the summer of 2021 the number of migrants increased significantly, which is trying to enter the territory of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland illegally from Belarus. Most migrants are arrived from Iraq.
Officials from the Baltic states and Poland pointed out that the Belarusian authorities deliberately do not obstruct the crossing of the borderto punish these countries for supporting the Belarusian opposition and sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko’s regime.
The European Union will do so described as the deployment of hybrid warfare and promises to help strengthen the EU’s external border.
