This Wednesday, October 25, 2023, a sad and deplorable scene happened in the Cobayah district in the commune of Ratoma. Hassane Barry, aged around ten, took the life of his friend with an automatic pistol belonging to his father.
According to informations collected from the victim’s father, it was in the evening that he was called to be informed of the sad news: “my son Ibrahima Sory Yattara was 14 years old, he was killed yesterday by his friend named by Hassane Barry, my neighbor’s child. It was around 5 p.m. when the authorities in my neighborhood called me to come that my child was shot. When I returned, I found all the neighborhood officials on the scene with the body of my child in blood,” said Mohamed Yattara.
Continuing, he will say that: “According to my child’s friends, the name Hassane Barry brought out his dad’s gun in front of them every time. The day before yesterday, his friends told him not to go to Hassane’s yard anymore, because he told us that he will kill you if he sees you. But as they are older than my boy, they refused to go into the yard of my neighbor named Rafiou Barry. Informed of this situation, my child also decided to no longer go to this playground. But yesterday Wednesday, according to my wife, little Hassane came to pick up our boy several times at home after they returned from school, to go play ball with him in their yard. A few minutes later, Hassane Barry ran out shouting that he shot my friend Ibrahima Sory Yattara to come and see if he is not dead,” testified the victim’s father.
Furthermore, he deplored the attitude of civil protection which only intervened late to take the victim’s body: “I want the authorities to help us find out the reasons for the death of my child. Around 7 p.m., as my child’s body was still on the scene and nothing was done, the population of our area revolted to try to burn down the house of Hassane Barry’s father. In the meantime, the police and the gendarmerie came to intervene by firing tear gas at the population. Afterwards, the firefighters came to take the body and tell us to go to Ignace Deen hospital,” explained Mohamed Yattara, father of the victim.
